Split Scene. Homework 2

Our scene starts with two boys playing Call of Duty on their consoles. Once they get into a game, the switch comes in and they are actually fighting in a real life war.

One of the boys gets shot, and then the reality of war takes it’s toll. He falls into his friend’s arms and dies. Then the surviving soldier pulls out a peice of paper from his pocket saying; “The Irony…”

The point that this scene is putting across is that kids that play Call of Duty and other war games.. are virtually experiencing; injuries, death and war in general.

Placards and Signs.

This for me is two pictures combined into one. The point that it is trying to put across is that War in games or films is nothing to do with war in reality. This would suit dramatic theatre, it would make a serious impact in a slightly ironic way. The man on the left is risking his life to fight for his country or his beliefs, whereas the Stormtrooper on the right is programmed to fight, or in the case of a video game, is just a virtual character.

Brecht and the V-Effect

Brecht and the V-Effect.
The V- Effect is extremely effective in theatre. We used it in a drill sergeant scene where we used the word “Grapes”. The repetitiveness was extremely effective and humorous at the same time. The audience knew what the scene was about, however the V-Effect still had an impact on the scene.

When using 1 word, it’s easier to change your tone and volume when speaking. It is also more interesting for the audience because in other situations, they could try and make out what the actors are saying. The drill sergeant scene was very self explanatory, however if it was expanded on, the V-Effect could’ve been much nicer to watch for the audience.

Brecht’s theatre is very artistic and unique. It gives play or a scene a whole new flow and sometimes changes the meaning too. Once worked on and adjusted our scene can be very powerful.

Language Essay. (Unfinished)

Many people would be surprised at how close the relationship between text language and spoken language is. Since text language came about, modern English has developed when it comes to certain aspects. Our English changes depending on the person we are speaking to and sometimes it isn’t even understood by other generations or social groups. This could have a positive effect or a negative effect, depending on the situation. It’s all about how relaxed the terms are between you and the recipient. You can’t have the same conversation with a Teacher, as you can with a school mate.

Sometimes, when people of my generation have conversations with their friends, older people stare curiously at them. The language that young people use can come across alien and pretty rude to people who aren’t from that generation or social group. However, a conversation with a mate, doesn’t have to be formal or polite, it doesn’t have any guidelines at all. This is where features such as “Banter” come into play. Banter is a very dangerous device. Many people have racist banter with their mates… however there is a time and a place for everything. For example when my friends call me “Serb”, I can take it as banter, however, this phrase is extremely offensive towards people of my background.  People can take offence to things really easily, even if isn’t directed at them. With speaking, things can be interpreted in many different ways, according to tone, facial expressions etc, unlike text language where everything you say is self-explanatory. Language has evolved throughout the years with features like Slang which many people can easily understand today. I wouldn’t say that the way things are interpreted in speech is an issue. People aren’t going to change their way of speech for the sake of other people, but it’s always good to keep an eye out on who is around you when you say certain things.

Text language has made a huge influence on the Modern English. Many acronyms such as “lol” (laugh out loud) which developed through texting, are used as actual words in the language we speak today. “lol” is a phrase in text which means you find something funny. You either really found it funny, or you felt bad to tell the person you were not amused. However if it was used in a real life conversation, it would be pretty obvious if someone found something funny or not. One of the main ways of expressing your feelings through text, is using an emoticon. Softwares such as ios provide a wide range of emoticons, sometimes using them could be equal to writing a whole sentence. This is probably why they are used consistently in text. Below are some sentences from a conversation I had with my friend regarding Geography Homework, the features of text are explained in depth.

Joe: “Send me the fucking geo”

For Standard English speakers this sentence would not make not much sense at all. “geo” is a phrase students at the London Nautical School and other schools use to replace Geography. In this case, Joseph probably just couldn’t be bothered to complete the word, but even so, shortening it still made the same effect. This is also known as a contraction. Ignoring the non-standard English, this sentence is also an imparative. Joseph is commanding me to send him the Geography homework. If we weren’t friends, this would be far from a suitable conversation starter.

Ibbz: “Who the fuck u talkin to”

This sentence involves a couple of non-standard English features. Ommision is used within the word “are” which should be in between “fuck” and “u”, omitted letters such as “g” from “talkin” and lopograms like “u” which replaces “you”. There is also punctuation missing, the sentence is in fact a question, so a question mark is needed. Replacing a word with a letter is called a lopogram.

Further down the conversation…

Ibbz: “She gave it to u Monday”

This sentence involves ommision, ” She gave it to u ON Monday.” It also has the lopogram of “u” for “you” which is a very common replacement in modern day chats.

Joe: “I can’t find it”

This is a perfectly standard English sentence. Apart from the missing full stop at the end.

He then goes on to say…

“Not the pic Of the sheet The writing”

This sentence doesn’t make sense without commas.  The correct way of writing this sentence is; Not the pic of the sheet, the writing. There is also a contraction of the word “Picture” to “pic” but that is fairly understandable to most people.

Joe: U             This is another lopogram. The word/Letter “U” in this instance recovers a whole sentence. I’m talking to you.

Ibbz: She gave it to u Monday        This sentence involves ommision, ” She gave it to u ON Monday.” It also has the lopogram of “u” for “you” which is a very common replacement in modern day chats.

Ibbz: Ive put it in my book you dumbass       Missing punctuation on “I’ve”. And a non standard English word in “dumbass”.

Joe: ???           Our new world of ios provides a large variety of emojis and flags, in this emoji sentence Joseph probably meant to say “Fuck Bosnia” but replaced it with a Bosnian flag and a gun pointing towards it. Because we are friends, I knew that this was a joke, or more commonly know in our society as “banter”.

Re-write a scene.

Jameel’s bedroom, enter Jameel and Auntie Sandra.

Jameel: I know that your intentions are good, however I want to be alone… I’ve got too much guilt on my mind, it ain’t right. I need whoever is up there to know that this isn’t me. I can’t fucking take it anymore!

Mum enters.

Mum: What is wrong babe… Do you need any advice.

Jameel: No mum, discussing it will make it worse, now leave me be, and talk to Auntie, she isn’t feeling too good either. I know you are worried but it’s ok, tomorrow ill be fresher than a mint.

Mum: Goodnight baby, get some rest, you need it

exit Mum and Auntie Sandra.

Jameel: Goodbye, only God knows when we will meet again, it surely won’t be on Earth though. My veins are cold, my heart is frozen. And I don’t care if this stupid drug doesn’t work at all, because i’ve had nothing to lose since that day, the day I took your life. What if the dealer knew Michael, what if they were close, what if the needle is spiked. What if I do it and he survives. I keep hearing screams and gunshots. His voice, his cry. The blood he left behind him.

Drops back on the bed.

My brain is hurting me, all the messages. I must do this.

Injects drug into arm, rolls of the bed and onto the floor.

In a quick flash, Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm and kills him. While Mercutio is dying he curses both the Capulet and Montague households.

After Mercutio’s death, Romeo fights and kills Tybalt.

Quote: ” A plague o’both your houses” Mercutio

Romeo tells The Nurs that Juliet needs to find an excuse to come to the church where she will marry Romeo.

Scene 5

events: Juliet awaits for her nurse for news of Romeo. The nurse plays about with her. Not telling her anything. The nurse cannot hold it in anymore and tells Juliet that Romeo is with friar Lawrence ready to get married. The nurse says that she will fetch a ladder forRomeo to go up on the balcony and spend time with Juliet.

Quote:” Oh my god here she comes! Oh sw?eet nurse, what news do you bring? Have you spoken to him?”

Act 2 scene 3

Character: Romeo, Friar Laurence.

setting: Friar Laurence’s cell

Events: Friar laurence is persuaded to  marry Romeo and Juliet. Friar says that romeo was probably having fun with rosalind the night before… Romeo states that he was with another girl from the foes side; Juliet.  Friar delivers a speech about how plants and herbs have potential to be healing.

Quote: ” thy love did read by rote, that could not spell. But come, young waverer, come go with me, in one respect I’ll thy assistant be:

for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” Friar Laurence.

This is a short scene… But it has some key points.  Romeo seems to let out a lot of enotion when he is alone with Friar. This is probably because the Friar is closest to God from all of the characters…

Romeo is leaded by God, which makes God the creator or controller of the story. This is a factor of Romeo and Juliet which is shown through Romeo’s soliliquiys.
